Plan trips

List what you want to do, then arrange it like a timetable. For the same trip, you can make several plans, like "3 days, 2 nights" and "Day trip," and compare their totals.

What is it?

It has two tabs: "Timeline" and "Ideas." Collect places you want to go and places you'd like to stay in Ideas. On Timeline, drag your ideas onto a calendar-like screen where time runs down and days run across. You can save a finished plan as an image or add it to your calendar as events.

How to use it

  • On the Home screen, tap "+" at the top right of "Top," then "Trip plan" (in Custom mode, you can also create one from "+" on the Wiki tab).
  • Collect ideas: Add them with "+" at the bottom right of the Ideas tab. Besides a title, you can set places, costs, URLs, notes, and a color. Add as many places as you like with "Add place." Add as many costs as you like with "Add cost," splitting them into items like "1 adult: 3,000" and "Child: 1,500" (the item name is optional). For travel between places, turn on "Transit" to the right of the place to set a separate departure and arrival. You start with 3 categories, "Ideas," "Hotel options," and "Getting around," and you can add, rename, and reorder categories freely.
  • Make a plan: On the Timeline tab, choose a plan name and length (from a day trip up to 30 days) and create it. You can make as many plans as you like, and each plan can have its own length.
  • Arrange events: Drag an idea onto the timeline, or tap an open time slot and pick one. Drag a placed event to move it to another time or day, and drag the round handles at the top and bottom to change its length.
  • Event buttons (+, Copy, Color, Comment): Tap an event to show buttons at its top right. "+" adds another event in the same time slot (events at the same time appear side by side). "Copy" asks for confirmation, then creates the same event again in the same time slot. The palette button changes the event's color, and "Comment" places a new comment there.
  • One-off events: Tap a time to show three buttons: "Event," "Transit," and "Comment." Choose "Event" to create an event just for that spot without saving it to Ideas. With "Transit," just pick a type like "Train," "Bullet train," or "Plane" to place it. Choose "Comment" to place a speech-bubble note in that time slot. Events created with Transit have "Transit" turned on from the start, so you can open them and set the departure and arrival right away. To keep an event in Ideas later, open it and choose "Save to ideas" from the menu at the top right. In the same menu, "Duplicate" creates another one in the same time slot, and "Delete" removes it.
  • All-day events: Place them in the strip under the day headings. For events that span several days, like a hotel stay, tap and drag the left and right handles to change the dates.
  • Add comments: Put short notes like "Still deciding" or "Need to confirm" on the timeline as speech bubbles. Tap an event, then tap its "Comment" button, and an empty bubble appears right there for you to type in (line breaks work too). Drag a bubble anywhere you like. The spot it points to stays put even if you change the view. Tap a bubble to select it and show buttons to change its color, rotate its pointer (8 directions), or delete it. Tap it again to edit the text. Comments are saved per plan.
  • Name your colors: On the screen for choosing an event's color, you can give each color a name like "Sightseeing" or "Meals." When you save a plan as an image, named colors appear as a legend to the right of the total row, so your partner knows what each color means too. Color names are shared across all plans.
  • Adjust the look: Pinch the timeline with two fingers. With your fingers side by side, you change the column width. With one above the other, you change the hour height. For finer control, including text size and the hours shown, use "Timeline display" in the menu at the top right.
  • Export: From "Share" in the plan list, choose to save it as an image (one tall image) or add it to your calendar (pick the first day of the trip and the events are added all at once).
  • Related pages & files: From "…" at the top right → "Show page menu," you can add links to memos, files, and more. The links appear at the top of the screen, and tapping one opens that page or file. The same links also appear on your partner's trip plan screen. They don't appear on the linked page itself.
  • How it looks in lists: In folder lists and in the Home screen shortcuts, the current counts appear under the trip plan's title, like "Plans: 1 · Ideas: 15."

FAQ

Q. Can I change the currency to dollars or something else?

Tap "..." at the top right and choose "Currency" to pick from 15 currencies, including yen, dollars, euros, and won. The setting applies to the whole trip (all plans). Amounts aren't converted. Only the symbol shown changes; the numbers you entered stay the same. You can't set a different currency for each plan (the same cost would mean different things in different plans). If the currency changes partway through your trip, make separate trip plans.

Q. How are totals calculated?

The costs of the events placed on the timeline are added up. If an event has several cost items, their sum is that event's cost. Cards and the timeline show only the total. Open an event to see the breakdown. For things like a hotel rate that you want counted only once no matter how many nights you place it, turn on "Total" for the item, and it's added to the total only once even if you place it several times.

Q. Why do events show different details?

Each event shows as much as fits its length (the block's height). Short events show only the title and start time, and longer ones also show the end time and place name. Transit events show the place as departure and arrival, like "Tokyo Station → Shinjuku Station." To show more, pinch with two fingers to make the hours taller, or make the "Text size" smaller in "Timeline display" in the menu at the top right so more info fits in each event.

Q. Can I make an event that goes past midnight?

Yes. Change the end time's date to the next day, and the timeline shows it split between the bottom of that day and the top of the next.

Q. Can we edit at the same time?

Yes. Your partner's changes show up on your screen automatically. If your partner makes a change while you're editing, it's brought in after your save finishes.

Q. Where do events go when I add the plan to my calendar?

They go into the default calendar you've set (or "Our events" if you haven't set one). If you edit the trip plan afterward, the calendar doesn't update automatically.

Q. Will my partner be notified when I make changes?

Yes. When you create a trip plan, or edit one and close the screen, your partner gets a notification if "Trip plans" is turned on in their notification settings. Comments are always notified, regardless of the setting.

Q. Can search find what's inside?

Yes. Wiki search covers category names, idea titles, notes, URLs, and plan names.
